Following the intense preparation and sleepless nights, wondering if this was going to be our time, after older drivers had left the tyro series, knowing we have done our best during the off season... Unfortunately It wasn't the greatest start to the 2020 season.
Having not had hardly any dry running during testing on Saturday, due to the fast, changeable weather conditions that were battering the Rissington track we were unsure of what would happen on Sunday's day of racing.
3 lap practice:
A damp start to the day however we struggled to pull any real lap time together, due to the fact we had high speed problems on the straights, which were giving us headaches all weekend. We made some changes hopeful of a better outcome as the heats progressed.
Heat 1:
Started 5th ended 7th... Finally some dry running although the track was very windy and greasy. We had a good start and gained a position into turn one, as we were going up the inside of another driver into turn 3 he suddenly closed the door on me and we were pushed onto the grass and into 13th(last place). Then we had a mega recovery drive to finish in P7 not quite managing to get back to P5. With high rev engine problems getting worse, after this heat we stripped the carb down to find it was very clogged, part of the problem solved!
Heat 2:
We were looking optimistic for heat 2 although the weather was not on our side. We started 5th finished 6th. We had hail, rain and dry running all in one heat so grip was hard to find and our speed had improved but our power was nowhere near where it should have been. We had a mad battle with another kart, both of us overtaking each other left right and centre but unfortunately the other kart came out on top in that battle.
Final:
Starting out of position due to kart problems, we had nothing to lose so whatever was going to happen we would hopefully take the opportunities. We started 8th and finished 5th, with a dry start to this race the karts in front pulled away and the result looked inevitable until our bestfriend came... Rain, snow and hail. Other karts started going off the circuit but we managed to stay on the track, with a few nice overtakes we made up 3 major positions and it leaves us sitting in 4th in the Rissington championship.
As always I want to say a huge thank you to my dad for taking me and helping me get through the not so greatest karting weekend ever.
Tyro kart 31, Joel Hull (12)
